Cristiano Ronaldo under the Barça jersey, it’s weird, right? Well that’s what could have happened in 2009. Guillem Balague, correspondent for the Daily as in London, wrote a book about Cristiano Ronaldo that will be released on October 19. In this book he mentions in particular the transfer of Portuguese from Manchester United to Real Madrid in 2009. It reveals that if CR7 had the goal of joining Real, Alex Ferguson had a completely different one. Transferring him to Barca: “Ferguson had tried the previous weeks for a Machiavellian strategy.” Faced with the inability to convince the Portuguese to stay, he contacted Barcelona for this to be his next destination. Everything but Real Madrid, “writes Guillem.” Unfortunately for Sir Alex, CR7 decided to join the Spanish capital: “Ronaldo had clearly indicated where he wanted to go”. Finally Manchester United accepted the record offer of Real Madrid (94 million euros) and let go its star.
The story does not say if Barca was really hot to get Ronaldo back, nor why the former Red Devils coach balked to let his foal go to the Casa Blanca. What is sure is that the Catalan supporters should not regret the failure of the Ferguson plan. It was precisely from 2009 that Messi literally blew up at Barca by winning his first gold ball, to which four followed. And it is not the Merengue supporters who will complain about it either. The Portuguese won two of his three gold balls under the white jersey and was in prime part in the conquest of two Champions leagues. It’s all right for everyone then.
